On the contrary, I always have far more ideas and projects in my head than I have time to do them. Which results in many ideas getting pushed aside, or "thrown in the vault" as I like to say. But every once in a while, an idea hits me and I feel compelled to drop everything and do it. This has happened to me twice recently, and although neither was a completely original idea, I was so struck with inspiration that I immediately started work on them.

The first was this outdoor music wall, which I saw pop up in my Facebook news feed a couple of months ago: http://www.filthwizardry.com/2010/05/music-wall-rip-music-tree.html

What a brilliant idea! And so easy, too. And I knew we had the perfect spot for it, so two days later I was already gathering junk from our basement to do it. It's still a work in progress, but here's a little sneaky peeky:

Outdoor music wall, in progress

I still have some more things I want to add to this, but it's a pretty good start! And literally the only thing I purchased for this was some spray paint to liven it up. Can't beat that! Or can you?? (Ha! See what I did there? Haha, eh, ahem.)

Moving on to the second idea... Several months ago, I got the urge to paint our van. No, not have it repainted, but to paint it myself. Crazy? Maybe a little, but it wouldn't be the first time I have painted a vehicle - I had a car in high school and college that I painted twice: once with random designs and the other with the solar system and stars. In any case, I have been thinking about this off and on for many months, but hadn't really come up with a plan of how I wanted to paint it.

///Fast forward to a couple weeks ago///

I was looking at one of those silly buzzfeed articles - you know the ones: "30 Amazing Photos That Will Change Your Outlook on Life" or "16 Animals That Are So Cute You Will Cry" or some other nonsense, seemingly always in a tidy little list format. I see these pop up in my Facebook news feed frequently, and I rarely click on them. But for some reason, I happened to click on one a couple weeks ago - I don't even remember what the article was now, but somewhere in the ridiculous list was a photo of a car painted with chalkboard paint. When I first saw the pic I kind of casually thought, "Haha, that would be fun." But after a day or so, I kept gravitating back to the idea and thought, "No, wait, that really would be fun!" And it was the perfect solution to my indecision of how to paint the van - if I painted it with chalkboard paint, we could draw on it and keep changing it!

Sneak peek at the chalkboard van!

It didn't take me long to start gathering supplies and begin work. And of course, as soon as I got a little section done, we had to try it out! Even though this is a fairly big project, two weeks after deciding to do it, I'm already half way done. When inspiration strikes like this, it really is a force to be reckoned with! Now I just have to wait out a couple of rainy days so I can finish it. Back to indoor projects for now!
Her birthday is right around the corner, but we decided to celebrate a little early when Grandma and Grandpa were visiting over the weekend. We also decided to keep it simple and just do a family celebration this year.

A couple weeks ago, I asked her what kind of cake she wanted, and she said, "Purple! With purple frosting! And strawberries!" I checked in with her a couple times in the days leading up to the celebration, and she gave the same answer every time. So, a purple cake with purple frosting and strawberries on top it was! Fortunately from all of my experiments in making a rainbow cake with natural food dyes, I knew exactly how to make a purple cake: blackberries.

Interestingly, though, the blackberry juice which turned the cake a nice shade of purple, turned the frosting more of a pink. I guess I need to do some frosting experiments! I added some blueberry juice, which turned it a bit more purple. In the end, it wasn't quite as purple as I had hoped, but the birthday girl loved it, so that's all that matters. Well, that and the fact that it tasted good. That matters, too!

The one and only present she asked for was a purple stuffy. She hadn't ever really showed preference for one color over another until just recently - now she clearly loves purple! Which makes me want to redecorate her room, but I have to keep reminding myself: one project at a time. Of course, that didn't stop me from going ahead and picking up purple paint chips at the hardware store. (Ok, so I may have a teensy bit of a paint-chip-collecting problem!) In any case, here she is with some of her presents: a purple puppy, which she loved, maracas, which were a big hit, and glitter paint - we go through a lot of paint in this house and were well overdue for a restocking. Big sis gave her the little dolly tucked under her other arm. So cute!

It's hard to believe she's (almost) three already. She's definitely not a baby anymore, which is a bit bittersweet. On the one hand, you kind of wish they could stay little forever, but on the other, watching your children grow up is such an amazing thing, and growing up she certainly is! Seriously, look at this big girl!! Next thing I know she'll be asking to borrow the car. Sigh.

I'm not one to usually mind winter, but this winter felt brutal. Bitter cold, tons of snow, lots of illnesses - it seemed never-ending. Needless to say, I've had spring fever for quite some time now. I've been daydreaming about starting up our garden again for months! And now, finally, finally the time has come. (Yippeeee!!!!) I looked back at my garden notes from last year, which reminded me, oh yeah, I have a blog that I haven't posted on in months. (Oops!) I guess I should have learned by now to never end a blog post with
"More soon!" as I did on my last one which was, oh, almost 8 months
ago. I suppose "soon" is relative, though, so 8 months could be considered soon, right? It's sooner that 8 years. Yeah, we'll go with that. Apparently that's how I roll with this blogging thing.

In any event, looking back through my notes, I remembered that I wanted to take better notes this year, and more photos. I'm going to make every effort to do that, so I started a log where I can quickly enter the date, what I did, and any observations or notes I want to remember. I'm not going to bore anyone with the minute details of that, so I'll just quickly sum up what we've done so far.

We decided to try starting some seeds indoors this year. We have a couple windows that get pretty good sunlight, so we thought we'd give it a go. We started with some tomatoes in mid-March, and they seem to be doing well. The last weekend in March, we went to a local garden center and let the girls each pick out one packet of flower seeds, and when we got home, we started some Chrysanthemums that G picked out and some chives. The following weekend, I added brussel sprouts and cabbage to our seedling collection, then watermelon.

Last weekend it was finally warm enough, and dry enough, to get outside and start preparing the garden beds. I've suddenly become very ambitious about gardening, and have decided to at least double the amount of space in our garden. (Who needs a lawn anyway?) In order to maximize our sunny area, I decided it was best to reconfigure our garden beds. So I dug up two 4' x 8' sections, and used some old boards we found under the deck (thank you, previous owners!) to build the beds. The girls were delighted to have a chance to dig in the dirt and see so many worms! We've already planted peas, carrots, beets, and potatoes in the first bed, and I moved some strawberry plants to the second one.

This weekend we're planning to plant more peas and carrots in the second one, and I'd like to do some onions and spinach and/or lettuce, but we'd have to pick those up. Oh, and I started building another bed, in addition to the 2 we are already planting and
the 3 others I have built, which will give us 6 in all. Yeah, I guess
that's a little more than double, huh? What can I say, I'm excited
about this whole gardening thing!

The painting has begun! I knew we had picked the right color when I opened the can of paint and G said, "Awesome!" And she was even more excited once we got some color up on the walls. Part of what sold her on this color was the fact that it's called 'Daisy' (she loves daisies). I'm the same way with paint colors - I know the name of the color doesn't really matter, but I have a hard time selecting a paint that, even though I may love the color, I don't like the name of. Silly, I know, but hey, it's who I am. And apparently who she is, too.

So, here's some before shots of her room:

Yikes. A pretty sad looking bedroom, eh? In my defense, this room was used only as clothing storage and a changing room for the girls for the past year, so I didn't really bother doing anything with it. And I wasn't too concerned with all of the boxes of outgrown clothes that were starting to stack up. So even just getting this room cleaned up and putting a fresh coat of paint on the walls will be a vast improvement. Here's a sneak peek at the painting progress:

We're loving this color! It's so bright and sunny, and has instantly made the room more cheerful. And made me realize that the trim definitely needs a fresh coat of paint as well.

I finally finished piecing the rainbow quilt top! Woohoo!!!!

This is a pretty big deal for me, as I started this quilt about a year and a half ago. I started off with a bang, made some progress, then it sat there, half-finished and lonely, waiting for me to pick it back up again. So this summer I set a goal to at least finish the top, and with only a couple weeks of summer left, I'm happy to say that I have met my goal! Yay, me!!

Now for the sleep issues and room rearranging. When we moved into our new house a year and a half ago, I was excited that the girls would finally be able to have their own rooms. In an effort to get her excited about the move, I promised G that we would paint and decorate her room first. But then reality hit. No one could have prepared me for the struggle we would have trying to get the girls to sleep in the new house. (Six months before she slept through the night again - yikes! And as for B - let's just not go there.) After a few months of both girls being up multiple times a night, we were frustrated, exhausted, and at our wits end. In a moment of sheer desperation, we decided to have them try sharing a room. Maybe being in the same room together would help them sleep better? At first it didn't seem to make much of a difference, but a few weeks later, things started to improve. And then, it happened: we got one child to sleep through the night. Woohoo! Two would be ideal, but we were thrilled that at least one was sleeping good again. So for the next year, the girls had their "bedroom" and a "dressing room". Not having any idea how long this would last, all plans for bedroom redecorating were put on hold.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, and big sis finally got fed up with little sis getting all of her things, and decided to try having her own room. Realizing that this may or may not work out, I made a deal with her: I would move only her bed into the dressing room, and she had to sleep there every night for one week. At the end of the week, she could make her final decision as to whether she wanted to stay or move back in with her sister. The transition went relatively smoothly (for her, at least - for B...not so much), and at the end of the week, she decided to stay in her own room. So we moved the rest of the furniture, and that night: disaster. Both girls up half the night. Ugh! Fortunately it seemed to just be that one night, and now G is back to her usual good sleep.

So...time to redecorate! We've been looking at paint samples together, trying to come to an agreement about colors for her room. Of all the colors we looked at, Rainforest Mist was her favorite:

Which I had to veto for the walls. Don't get me wrong, it's her room and I want her to have say in how it's decorated, but given the very bold floral wall paper in the hallway, I couldn't live with this color on the walls. It would just fight with the nearby wallpaper too much, and would drive me batty every time I walked by her room. So, I made some other suggestions, and we've decided on Daisy for the walls:

And she really liked some pinks too:

So we've decided to go with Daisy as the main color, with accents of Prairie Rose, and some version of this blueish-greenish aqua color that she loves so much:

I think we've come to a good compromise with this, and I can't wait to get started! I picked up the yellow paint today, so maybe I'll even be able to get started on the walls this weekend!

Lucky for me, hubby is far from a perfectionist. While I will agonize over how exactly to do a project and scrutinize every detail, he will just grab some stuff and slap it together. Case in point: our garden. We've been talking about making a vegetable garden for...oh, I don't know, years. Several years ago, we attempted one at our old house, but it was quickly gobbled up by the groundhog that lived in the woods behind our house (he came into our yard so much, we even gave him a name: "Pucker"). Eventually we decided it wasn't worth the effort to try to grow vegetables to feed Pucker. So that was the last of the gardening at our old house.

Last summer was the first summer at our new house, and it was then that we discovered that half our lawn was dead. We thought it might be a good place to put a garden in, but decided to wait and see what would happen with the lawn over the summer (weeds...the answer is weeds would happen). This spring we again discussed putting a garden in. I, of course, wanted to plan out all of the details: decide on the exact size and shape, get just the right boards to build raised beds, figure out precisely when to plant which seeds, etc. Then one day hubby said, "I think I'll go outside and put together a garden bed." I'll admit my first thought was "I don't think so." You see, he isn't exactly the handiest of guys, and besides that, what about all my garden plans (you know...the ones I had yet to make)?? However, despite my hesitation, I agreed to it. So, he found some boards under our deck (thank you, previous owners!), and voila - a garden bed. It may not have been perfect, but it was done, and that's more than I can say for my garden bed (which was still entirely in my head). We were even able to make a second one with more boards the previous owners had left.

In mid April, we sowed our first seeds: peas and carrots. We also planted potatoes, I think around the same time, but my memory is a little fuzzy. Hopefully this blog post will at least give me something to look back on so I can remember what we did when next spring rolls around. (First note to self: take more notes!) The peas were the first to sprout up and it quickly became evident they needed something to climb. In an effort to be resourceful, we found some large sticks in the yard, shoved them in the soil at the edges of the rows of peas, and tied twine between them. For the most part, this worked fairly well. However, once they got taller it seemed like they could use more support, especially after getting drenched from the many rain showers we've had this summer. (Note #2: peas need more support!) The carrots took a lot longer to sprout up, but they're doing good now. At least I think they're doing good now (how can you tell with carrots??) And the potatoes seem to be doing good as well. Oh, and hubby found a strawberry plant growing elsewhere in the yard and moved it to the garden. No sign of strawberries yet, but it is still alive at least. We also had a few random tomato plants pop up, which we moved to the garden as well. Cherry tomatoes were the one and only thing we grew last year - apparently they reseed themselves (bonus!). So that's garden bed #1.

In garden bed #2, we planted green beans and cucumbers, probably in mid-May, but I can't recall for sure. We also threw in a couple more volunteer tomato plants we found. The green beans are doing great. The cucumbers took a bit longer to get going, but now the vines are really starting to grow, and there's not much room for them. Which means we're <strike>scrambling</strike> being resourceful and looking around the yard to find something for them to climb. (Note #3: cucumbers need something to climb, or room to sprawl!)

The first week of July, we tasted our first peas, and man were they delicious! We've been eagerly gobbling them up over the past couple weeks. In fact, only about half of them actually make it into the house. (Note #4: plant more peas!) I think it was about a week later when we got our first green beans, which were super tasty, too. Then we were gone for 4 days, and returned to a partially wilted garden, but an excellent little harvest!

Fortunately after a good soaking, everything that was wilted snapped back. And since I started composing this blog post a week ago, we dug up the rest of the potatoes (which were super delicious!) and picked our first cucumber (which was yummy too!). All in all, I'm super pleased with the results of our garden so far this year, and definitely want to do even more next year!

In summary, my notes for next year:
1. Take more notes, and photos, right from the beginning.
2. Get or make something better for the peas to climb.
3. Get or make something better for the cucumbers to climb, or give them more room to sprawl.
4. Make at least one more garden bed, so we can grow lots more veggies - definitely plant more peas and potatoes!
5. Try something new - maybe broccoli??
6. And don't worry about making the garden perfect, because...
7. Everything tastes better when it's homegrown, and...
You get the idea.

Recently my life had become so full of these "somedays", that they started to become overwhelming. Everywhere I looked, it seemed there was a reminder of something I wanted to do, but had put off until "someday". I became stuck. I had all these things to do someday, but what about today? My entire life felt like it was on hold, waiting to happen. And what kind of life is that??

Of course, with little ones in the house, it's often difficult to find the time for everything you want to do. (Love them as I do, they sure are time-suckers!) But I've come to realize how important it is to carve out time for yourself. And how important it is to prioritize your life. And to make changes so that you can do the things that really matter to you. You know that saying, 'If mom's not happy, no one is'? Yeah, that.

When Little G (who's not so little now) started Kindergarten last fall, I started thinking more about my job and how it wasn't really working for me anymore. While there were aspects of working at a florist that I enjoyed (and still do, on occasion), others...not so much. Like being tied to retail hours and being expected to work extra hours for every holiday. That was really starting to get to me. I wanted to be home with G before and after school. I wanted the flexibility to be able to volunteer in the classroom. I wanted to enjoy our holidays instead of being stressed out working overtime. I wanted more say in what I did with my time.

So I made a change. It wasn't easy. I had been at the same job for nearly 10 years. But when I found a job working from home doing something I love to do anyway, I knew I had to take a chance and seize the opportunity. I admit the transition to a new job has been rocky, but several months in, I have no regrets. True, there has been more of learning curve than I anticipated. True, it has been a struggle to manage my time efficiently and get enough work done. True, we've had to make sacrifices because my income is lower now. But has it all been worth it? Absolutely! When I look back at the school year and think about all of the things that I was able to do that just wouldn't have been possible had I not made this change, it has been undoubtedly worth it. Am I still struggling to adjust to the new job? Yes. But I'm trying to keep a positive outlook and have faith that it will work out, given time. And if it doesn't...well, at least it was a step in the right direction. That I know for certain!

Over the course of the past year, all this job transition stuff has taken a lot of my time and energy. The "somedays" started piling up again. But that was bound to happen...after all, this wasn't simply a change of job, it was a complete change of career. A complete change of the way I spend my time, and the way I live my life. And the past few months haven't exactly been typical either. This spring, just as I was starting to get in a good rhythm with work/life balance, something unexpected happened: my father was diagnosed with lung cancer, and less than 2 months later, he was gone. Seeing someone close to you die is a surefire reminder for you to live. And not just to complacently go through your days, but to actually live your life to the fullest. To do all of the things you want to do. To experience new and exciting things, but also to savor the quiet little moments too. It's not always easy, but I'm doing my best to keep all this in mind as I heal and move forward. Baby steps, I keep reminding myself. And as for all those "somedays"? Well, now I say there's no someday like today.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-50560235400052475242012-08-22T10:05:00.000-04:002012-08-26T06:45:22.584-04:00Rainbow Birthday PartyLittle G turned five this summer. Five!! She love, love, loves rainbows, so I thought what better way to celebrate her 5th birthday than by having a rainbow birthday party! So I sat down with her and talked to her about her birthday party, and when I mentioned the idea of a rainbow theme, her face lit up with excitement. At that moment, I knew it was a go. I started brainstorming and scouring the internet for ideas, then got right to work.

First on the agenda: rainbow party invites. I decided to design these myself and was really happy with how they came out. After a bit of hemming and hawing, I finally decided on the wording "Please join us for a rainbow of fun as we celebrate Gretchen's birthday!", the letters all being in rainbow colors, of course. I initially had it with a white background, but it still seemed a little blah, so I added a blue sky background with a fluffy white cloud. So that's the front:

On the inside is a big colorful rainbow with all of the details of the party:

Next up: the rainbow party decorations. I wanted to keep the decorations fairly simple and inexpensive, so we started out making some paper rainbows. Very easy to do...all you need is some paper or card stock in all the rainbow colors, something to cut it with (I used a paper cutter so that my strips would be nice and straight), and a stapler.

When we were making these, I was planning to stick with the traditional ROY G BIV color scheme, but G thought there should be pink in the rainbows, so we added that. She also took a great interest in the
color indigo...she was very intrigued by this new color that she had
never heard of!

On party day, we ended up putting these on a table inside with the rainbow sticker books (more on this in a bit!) and some rainbow roses (yes, they are real, and yes, they are dyed):

Crepe paper streamers are also an inexpensive and easy way to make a party feel festive. Since this was a rainbow party, I picked up rolls in all of the rainbow colors (even indigo!!). On party day, I hung a few streamers on the front porch so that our guests could easily spot the party house, then I hung them all along the ceiling creating a path from the front door, down the hall, to the kitchen, then split them so that half led to the back door (most of the party was in the back yard), and the other half led to the playroom (which, by the way, is not yet 100% done, but I did at least get the rainbow finished before the party...pics soon!!). Here's a couple pics of the streamers:

So that's the decorations. Now for the rainbow party food! If you've looked for rainbow party ideas on the internet, you will likely have come across all sorts of dyed food concoctions to make rainbow food. But since all of the colors of the rainbow can be found in food naturally, I don't see the need to make all of these dyed rainbow food-like things. I kept it simple with fruit skewers, a veggie tray, and bags of rainbow goldfish crackers (made with natural dyes...yay!). Here's the food table:

Ooooh, pretty! I couldn't have been happier with house this turned out. I really didn't have a plan ahead of time of how I was going to set the food table up, but I was thrilled when I saw in the forecast that the weather was going to be nice and we could have most of the party outside! So I popped up a folding table, threw a cheap white table cloth on it, then ran more of those rainbow streamers (those big rolls of streamers really keep going and going!) across the top and down the sides.

Veggies were layed out in rainbow stripes: grape tomatoes, baby carrots, yellow bell peppers, cucumbers, blue corn chips (closest I could get to a blue veggie!), and purple cauliflower, with bowl of ranch dip (kind of like a cloud!):

Rainbow fruit skewers with watermelon, oranges, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, and grapes. These were a big hit! Almost all of them were eaten by the time the party ended:

You may have noticed a rainbow at the back of the food table (no, not the one hanging on the fence...we'll get to that in a minute). This one is a rainbow of flowers! My mom knew we were having a rainbow party for G's birthday, and put in a special request with her favorite florist (that would be me!) for some rainbow flowers for the birthday girl. So I came up with this:

Birthday girl loved it, and our party guests did too!

So rainbow invites, rainbow decorations, rainbow food, rainbow flowers...how about some rainbow fun?? For birthday parties, I like to have at least one or two games or activities lined up...gives the kids something to do and makes it feel like a party. With the rainbow theme, I thought a scavenger hunt would be perfect! Since kids usually love stickers, I decided to go with a rainbow sticker scavenger hunt. So I made sticker books for all of the kids, with a page for each color of the rainbow:

I got lucky and found some great deals on stickers in rainbow colors (thank you Target dollar spot and Christmas Tree Shops!), which I cut apart and divided into each color of the rainbow (except indigo, much to G's dismay). Each color was put in a bowl with a little sign:

I hid these bowls of stickers all around the house. Initially I was going to make up clues to lead from one color to the next, but decided to nix it due to time constraints and also the fact that it wasn't really necessary for this age group to have fun with the hunt. The kids loved this, and every one of them found all of the colors!

Now for that other rainbow you saw hanging on the fence. This one was for the Rainbow Limbo! G was so excited about doing the Rainbow Limbo at her party. I had planned to do something more elaborate for the rainbow (I had visions of clear tubing filled with colored water so the light would shine through the colors). In the end, I went with something much simpler, but still totally effective. And since I already had plenty of streamers in all the rainbow colors, I figured I may as well use those:

The kids had a blast doing this! After we had gone from high to low, G wanted to go from low to high, so we went with it. And after that, it seemed like the kids still wanted to play, so I figured why not milk it for all it's worth? I gave the kids a series of things to do going under the Rainbow Limbo, like "hop on one foot", "tip toe", and "hop like a bunny". Then I had G be the leader, and everyone had to follow her, copying her movements. Fun stuff!!
Now for the cake. The rainbow cake. I performed several experiments to make a rainbow layer cake with natural food dyes and got mixed results. I thought I had all of the colors down, but I was a bit disappointed when baking the final cake that the orange layer did not turn out as it had previously, and the red/pink layer was not as vibrant as I had hoped. But overall, you got the idea. And not a drop of food coloring in it, so I can at least be proud of that!
And now finally, the rainbow party favors. I had so much fun with these! G helped pick out the favors, and everything had to be rainbow, of course. We packaged everything in cellophane bags, tied at the top with curling ribbon in rainbow colors, and attached a tag that said "rainbow to go!":
And that about sums up the Rainbow Birthday Party. Yes, a lot of planning and effort went into it, but in the end when I asked G what her favorite part of the party was and she replied, "Everything! The whole day!", it was all well worth it. A smashing success! Here's one last photo of the birthday girl with one of her rainbow roses (you can almost see her rainbow nail polish...)
We had every intention of starting work on the exterior of our home this summer, but due to some other unexpected expenses (pest removal and car repairs...fun!), it looks like it's going to have to wait until next summer (boo!). But we did start looking at colors and have at least narrowed it down to blue. On the bright side, I guess now we have another year to decide on the exact shade! And I do believe we have at least rid the house of all of the critters which had invaded it and gotten the holes sealed up tight (knocking vigorously on wood), so that is definitely a good thing.

Since we haven't been able to do much with our house, I thought the least I could do was redecorate this blog. It was looking pretty bland, and our home is full of character, so shouldn't the blog reflect that? I was debating what changes to make to the blog when it dawned on me: The Flower House. When we first looked at this house last summer, little G called it "the flower house" because of the floral wallpaper lining the entire entryway, stairway, and hallway upstairs.

Over the course of the next few months, whenever we talked about the house, we would call it "the flower house". The name just stuck, and seemed very fitting. Now, I'm not typically a fan of wallpaper, but for some reason this wall paper has really grown on me. I think a large part of that is because little G was so excited about "the flower house." So, what better background to use for this blog than the very wallpaper that gave this house its name? Hope you like the new look!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-54015116745681838772012-05-31T23:38:00.002-04:002012-05-31T23:38:44.754-04:00A Saga of Household PestsAs I mentioned briefly in this post, we have had squirrels in our attic (well, technically, the ceiling above the attic, since the attic is finished). But that's not all we have had for household pests. It actually has become quite comical the things we have encountered since we moved in. In fact, so much so that I thought the subject deserved to be put into writing. So I thought I'd share a poem I've been working on about our household pests.

A Saga of Household Pests
by Shannon Hanley

When we first moved in
We knew there were mice
So traps we did set
Not once, and not twice,
But several times
Until we were certain
We had caught all of
These pesky vermin.

Then one day we saw
A small squirrel scurry
Into our attic
In such a hurry.
So we set a trap
To catch our intruder,
Enticing him with
Sunflower-nut butter.

Two squirrels were caught
And driven far away,
In hopes that they wouldn’t
Return to us someday.
We thought we were done
With our unwelcome guests,
Until we heard more
Scratching and unrest.

So then we decided
To call in the trapper,
To see if he could see
What was the matter.
Grey squirrels, he thought,
And he trapped some more,
Taking them far away
From their little door.

But then we were all
Quite surprised to find
Some more squirrels of
A different kind!
The flying squirrels who
Had also come to nest
Up in our attic
Would need to be addressed.

I think the trapper
Had now realized
That this job was bigger
Than he first had eyed.
As for us, we are
Very, very glad
That we gave up trapping
And hired this man.

We seemed to be done
With all the squirrels,
When we found out that
Our yard was in peril.
The crows were feasting
On something in the grass -
We weren’t too concerned,
We thought it would pass.

But then something else came
Through our lawn late one night -
Foxes pawing the ground -
It was quite a site!
It appeared there were grubs
That the birds were chomping,
But what of the foxes?
Why were they stomping?

We started asking
And some suggested moles,
But we didn’t see
Tracks or mounds, just holes.
It’s still undetermined
What’s destroying our lawn,
But at least the foxes
Seem to now be gone.

All was well for some time,
Then one day I went up
To the attic to work
And heard some hubbub.
Squirrels again?? I thought,
But the next morning
Something unexpected -
We had no warning.

We were startled to see,
When we glanced outside
Our bedroom window,
Looking at us wide-eyed,
Sitting on our roof,
Was a little raccoon.
I thought to myself,
What’s next - a baboon?

You would think we lived
Way out in the woods,
With all these pests coming
To our neighborhood.
But in the city
Happily we dwell -
Even with these troubles,
We still think it’s swell.

But I do hope that
Our saga of pests
Very, very soon
Can be put to rest.
And that no new critters
To our house should roam,
Wreaking more havoc
In our new home.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-55379471722933744742012-05-29T09:21:00.000-04:002012-05-29T09:21:20.534-04:00Playroom Update! We're finally making some progress in the playroom. I've been slowly chipping away at the task of painting all of the trim white, and I've come to two realizations:

1. Painting windows is very tedious
and
2. I probably should have used primer.

But, live and learn, eh? I actually thought for half a second before I started that priming might be a good idea, but then I discovered the nearly full gallon of white semi-gloss in the basement, and thought:

go out and buy primer (and therefore delay the start of the project)
or
jump right in and just start with the paint (not spending any money and getting immediate gratification? It's a win-win!)

Obviously I opted for the latter. So, two coats in on most of the trim, and it looks like a third will need to be applied (dag nabbit!). That being said, I'm loving the white trim. Makes the whole room feel lighter and brighter.

Then I got this great idea to make valances for the windows that look like puffy white clouds (why is it that every project I start becomes more and more involved along the way?). So I've been playing around with a piece of white fabric I had laying around (me? have spare fabric?? never!!), and I think I've got it pretty well figured out. But, I will need more fabric to make three valances, so off to the fabric store I go. In the meantime, here's a little sneak-peek at the grassy hills, which I did finally manage to finish up this weekend:
We've had a lot going on this month, and I haven't had a moment to blog about any of our house projects. So here's a little recap of our April:

1. Realized that painting the exterior of our house might be a bit more than we are capable of doing on our own this summer. So...
2. Got several estimates from painters.
3. Raked and bagged more leaves.
4. Seasonal allergies kicked in (ugh!)
5. Fixed our broken garage door (well, I should say a temporary quick-fix...I expect we will have to revisit this little project again soon)
6. Put up a baby gate and baby-proofed the playroom for a newly mobile baby b.
7. Discovered half of our lawn is dead (more on this another day)

8. Continued sewing the rainbow quilt.
9. Started painting the play room (here's a little sneak peek:

I'm loving the blue, but I still have to get the green paint for the grassy hills, and...
10. I realized that I definitely want to paint the trim white in the play room (of course!)
11. Shuffled some furniture around.
12. Thought we had finally gotten rid of all of the squirrels above our attic (did I mention we had squirrels above our attic? More on this another day)
13. Raked and bagged more leaves. (really? more leaves??)
14. Washed the siding on our front porch (here's a pic of it half way done:
15. Heard something scurrying around above our attic and realized that we were wrong about #12.
16. Planted some grass seed in the mud pit (what I like to call the fenced area behind the house where there is nothing growing except for a couple hostas along the side, and apparently where some previous inhabitants had chickens!)
17. Pruned a few tree branches.
18. Passed an annoying cold around our family.
19. Realized we did not do a thorough enough job with #6 , so we moved more things around and out of the play room. (As a side note, quite surprisingly, this is one of the most injury-producing items in our home:
So there you have it. All in all, I'd say it was a good month, and I feel like we got a lot of little things accomplished. With some unseasonably warm days last week (in the 70's in March?? Usually it's still snowy!), we were actually able to get outside and start cleaning up the yard a bit. So we raked up some leaves (9 bags full, to be exact), and unveiled some of the landscaping.

I knew we had a few
crocuses, as they had already made there way up through the covering of leaves, and I was excited to see some
daffodils popping up too. I think there may be some irises and lilies as
well, but it's a bit early to tell since they are just barely coming up
out of the ground. It will certainly be fun to see what else we have
growing.

Then over the weekend we got a reality check when the weather went back to more
typical March temperatures (40's and even some snow this morning!). So I decided to go back to my big indoor
project of the rainbow quilt. Getting it all laid out was quite the task (1008 squares and no definite plan for how they'd fit together...what was I thinking?!?). I had to shuffle the squares around a lot to get the stripes even and blending together nicely. And of course I hadn't cut quite enough squares, and of course I didn't have quite enough of one of the colors, so I had to go pick up one more fat quarter to fill in the gap. But all in all, I'm quite happy with the progress, and also with how much of my fabric stash I have been able to use in this project.

Anyhow, I did finally get it all laid out and have
even started sewing! Yippee!! And in the process, little g is getting
her first sewing lessons. She was very curious about my sewing machine
and iron, and asked me all kinds of questions them, wondering how
they worked. I guess it's time to find a simple sewing project for her
to do and start learning some mad seamstress skills. But for now, she's happy to help line up the squares after I've sewn them together. It's nice having a little assistant!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-16708484465900143542012-03-20T08:58:00.001-04:002012-03-20T08:58:29.755-04:00Playroom PlansI love having a playroom. I pretty much knew from the get-go that we would be able to have a playroom for the girls in this house, and where it would be. At some point in this house's history, an addition was put on the back. So straight behind the kitchen is a little laundry area, off to the right is a bathroom, and off to the left is this extra room. Perfect place for a playroom!

So here's a few pics of the playroom in its current state:
While the color of this room is not intolerable, as you can see, it is a bit drab for a kids playroom. I feel a playroom should be cheerful and vibrant and happy, not dull and muted. So we will definitely be painting it soon. I was talking with little g about painting and suggested we get creative and paint grassy hills and blue skies. She loved the idea, and thought we should add a rainbow on one wall.

So here's a couple of rough sketches of what I'm thinking:
As for the rainbow, we're still debating whether to paint the entire rainbow, or only include a section of it. I think we're leaning towards a section of it. What do you think?
I'm thinking we will probably paint all the trim white as well, but I haven't decided for sure yet. And I'd love to put in a new ceiling fan/light fixture and new flooring, but I have to keep reminding myself: one thing at a time...one thing at a time. So for now, the next thing on the agenda will be deciding on the shades of blue and green. Off to the paint store!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-7466722724334719232012-03-13T22:20:00.000-04:002012-03-13T22:20:25.809-04:00Quilt Progress

So I'm a few weeks into the rainbow quilt project now, and I'm pretty excited about the progress I have made. There have, of course, been some setbacks (there always are, aren't there?), for instance, not being able to find my rotary cutter. I looked in every place I thought I would have packed it, and I kept finding all these extra blades and even a couple of blade sharpeners, but no cutter. So eventually my sweet hubby just ordered me a new one.

Once I got my new cutter, I could get to work cutting all those squares (1008 to be exact). Of course, being that I am trying to use up a bunch of scrap pieces of fabric, I didn't really have a definite plan of how many of each color I would need. So I just kind of winged it and started cutting away. And of course I didn't keep track of how many squares total I had cut (what fun would that be?!?), so I'm at a point where I need to start laying them all out to see where I stand. So for now, here are the rainbow quilt squares:

Oh, and that missing rotary cutter? I just found it in my box of thread. :\Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-73319746166045417172012-03-06T13:06:00.001-05:002012-03-06T13:06:41.582-05:00Our Front PorchWhen we first looked at our house last summer, one of the first things that I fell in love with was the front porch (seriously, the columns, the bench swing...how could you not??). It's a beautiful porch, but it certainly has seen better days (note the dirty exterior and chipping paint). We will definitely be needing to give it some love, but living in Maine, it's just a wee bit chilly to be doing much of that kind of work outdoors right now. So as eager as I am to start sprucing up the front porch, I guess it will have to wait a bit longer until it's consistently well above freezing. But I still wanted to share some photos of our lovely porch, so consider these the "before" pictures.
Sure, some of the paint colors and wall paper wouldn't have been my first choice, but they certainly wouldn't have been my last choice either. So it was nice to just move in and get settled before diving into redecorating. But now that we are getting more settled, I'm itching to get started!

I promised little g that her room would be the first room we would do this spring. Since we're still a ways off from being warm enough to open up the windows and paint (it was a balmy 42 degrees today), I've been thinking about bedding. She recently saw a quilt I had made for someone, and was fascinated by it, so I decided that I should make her a new quilt for her new room. In typical me fashion, I scoured the internet for some ideas (collecting them on a Pinboard, of course). After first she had said she wanted a frog quilt, then she saw one with ladybugs and daisies that she liked a lot, but then she saw the rainbow quilt. She got really excited and said, "I want that one!". So rainbow quilt it is.

So I started digging through my fabric stash. I didn't really have a proper workspace at our last house, so my art/craft/sewing supplies were scattered around (a few things in this closet, a few things in that closet, some in a corner here, some packed up in the basement, etc, etc). Now that I have everything all in one spot, all I can say is wow. I didn't quite realize how much stuff I had accumulated over the years. After the initial shock, I was pleasantly surprised at how many fabrics I found that could work for this project (using up my stash and saving money...can't beat that!), and I had a pretty good start on a rainbow:

But it wasn't quite complete, so we headed to the fabric store to pick up a few more fat quarters to fill in the gaps:

So now we have this:

Now that I'm looking at the stack, I'm not sure if I'll keep that dark green in there or not. Looks like it might stand out a bit too much. But all in all, I'm pretty please with the rainbow. Now to start cutting!

Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-2124865919849091072012-01-17T13:45:00.000-05:002012-01-17T13:45:26.056-05:00Inspiration and VisualizationI'm always scouring the internet for ideas and inspiration. When I came across something I loved and wanted to remember, I would always bookmark it for later. But even if I kept my bookmarks well organized (which I've been slacking on lately), it was hard for me to remember which bookmarks were for what, and why I bookmarked them, without clicking on every single one. Then I found Pinterest. What a fantastic site for visually oriented people like me! If you're not familiar with Pinterest, it's basically a way for you to create online bulletin boards to "pin" all of your bookmarks to. So I can see at a glance what I have "pinned", and therefore remember why I saved it, without having to actually open the link (brilliant!).

After getting my Pinterest account set up and familiarizing myself with how everything worked, I thought what better way to start collection inspiration for some of our home improvement and redecorating projects! The biggest project we have coming up will be to paint the exterior of our house. This is going to be a huge job, so I want to give a lot of thought to the color we choose. To get some ideas, I started out (as I usually do) with a google image search. I found some houses similar to ours that I liked, and made a pin board to collect them all in one spot, which makes it super easy to compare the different looks:

When I was doing the google image search, I also happened upon this post, from another blogger who needs to paint her old house too. She had a found this great tool from Sherwin-Williams where you can try out different colors on your house without getting out a paintbrush. It's called the color visualizer, and you can find it here. I'll definitely be spending some time trying out colors on our house! In the meantime, I'll also be searching and pinning away, like ideas for redecorating little g's bedroom, and inspiration for our someday kitchen remodel (it's never too early to start getting ideas, is it?).Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-4998626749946234152012-01-03T10:26:00.001-05:002012-01-03T10:44:36.190-05:00Home Improvement Project #1: New DishwasherWhen we bought this house, we knew that the dishwasher was broken. Now, I realize that a dishwasher is not really a necessity, but after having lived with one for the past 7 years, it's definitely hard to go back to not having one. So at the top of our list of home improvement projects was to get a new one. Neither my husband or I have the time or the know-how to take on installing a dishwasher ourselves, so we opted to hire it out. And I'm very glad we did!

When the installer arrived this morning and started trying to take out our old dishwasher, he hit a bit of a snag: the ceramic tile was put down after the previous dishwasher was put in, so the floor was actually higher than the the dishwasher (ugh!). But luckily, after much hard work on his part, he was able to tilt it up just enough to slide it out (whew!). Installing the new one was a bit of a struggle as well, since the opening between the floor and counter top is shorter than it should be, but he did it (hooray!).

Now to test it out on all those dirty dishes that have been piling up...Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-21300652851133975622011-12-28T20:29:00.000-05:002011-12-28T20:29:07.638-05:00Home for the HolidaysMoving in and of itself is a lot of work. Moving the week before Christmas while you have bronchitis, well, that's just plain nuts! Being sick the 2 weeks prior to the move led to us not being as prepared as we would have liked to have been, and the illness lingering on after the move has led to us not being as settled as I thought we would be by now, but hey, that's life, right? And I must say, even though we're still somewhat in a state of chaos around here (surrounded by boxes, wondering where the heck we packed x, y, and z), we feel very much at home. And it was so great to be here in our new home for Christmas!

One of the first things we unpacked was, of course, our Christmas tree and ornaments (I mean, we do have priorities...who cares about finding your pajamas or a hairbrush when you've got a Christmas tree to put up?!?). Little G was so excited to put the tree up. I had actually hoped to put up more Christmas decorations, but it just wasn't happening, so the tree was it for us this year. Oh, and stockings, of course! I was excited to finally have a good place to hang the stockings. No fireplace here, so no mantle, but there's a perfect little ledge by the columns between the living room and dining room. So I picked up a couple of stocking hooks, which just happened to fit perfectly in the space.

I was also very excited to receive two new ornaments this year. When I was little, every year, my grandmother would make ornaments for my sister and I and attach them to our packages. Over the years most of them have migrated to me, so probably 90% of our ornaments are these handmade ones, my favorites being the ones made from felt. Well, this year, my mother-in-law made these two beautiful handmade felt matryoshka ornaments. I was so delighted to receive them, and they look fantastic with all of the other handmade ornaments on our tree.

Soon we will start packing up all the Christmas stuff, and start focusing on more pressing issues, like where to put our plates that are too big to fit in our shallow kitchen cabinets, and getting proper lamps for the rooms that have no light fixtures. Now the fun begins!
I wasn't about to drag out all my Christmas decorations with our move quickly approaching, but I couldn't stand to have nothing up. Fortunately, as I was packing last week, I came across this little vintage Christmas tea towel.

This is one of my favorite Christmas decorations and has been in my family for many years. It was embroidered by my grandmother, and I remember my parents putting it out every year when I was a child. I've always loved the quiet little scene so intricately depicted on it. I have been intending to frame it for quite some time now, so that I could more easily display it on my wall at Christmas time. Last year I left it out after Christmas, thinking that at some point during the year, I would get it done for this Christmas. Then in typical me fashion, I got busy, set it aside, and forgot about it. But when I uncovered it last week, I decided it was time to take a break from the packing, and get right to it!

I hadn't given a whole lot of thought to how I would frame it, but I've seen some things like this framed right in embroidery hoops and thought that might be a good option, especially since there were several stains on the non-embroidered parts. And it just so happened that I had an embroidery hoop not yet packed up that was the right size. Perfect! I liked the contrast of the red edge of the towel, so I decided to paint the hoop red to keep the same look. So here is our one and only Christmas decoration we have put up:

I think it came out quite nice! It may not be much as far as decorating is concerned, but it is definitely special to me, and it's just enough of a touch of Christmas to tide me over until we move later this week. Then we can get many more decorations out!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-58790261809172857812011-12-01T21:18:00.001-05:002011-12-01T22:00:53.142-05:00Boxes, Boxes, Everywhere!

Now that it is December, I can officially say that we are moving this month. In just 2 weeks, as a matter of fact. (Yippee!!) So, we've been packing, and packing, and packing. Packing seemed so much easier last time we did it, but 7+ years and 2 kids later, we have accumulated quite a lot! Nearly every room in our house already has a stack of boxes that have been packed, sealed, and labeled, yet there is still lots more packing to do.

Aside from all the packing, things are moving along with the purchase of the house. We had our appraisal this week, which went very well. As I had mentioned before, there were a few things we thought might need to be fixed prior to closing for our FHA loan, however, the only thing our appraiser required that we do was remove a section of the deck that had no railings. Pretty easy! Well, I guess I should say easy for me, since it was hubby and our realtor who did all the work (thanks, guys!!).

So now we're just tying up loose ends, and continuing to prepare for the move. And as we do, even though we're not moving to a deee-luxe apartment in the sky, I can't help but have the theme from The Jefferson's in my head. When I searched for it on you tube, I found this video of two guys dancing along to it. They look like they're having so much fun...makes me smile! Hope it makes you smile too! :)
Our offer has been accepted and approved by the bank, so we are officially "under contract"! (Hooray!!!) And, thanks to the generosity of our families and impeccable timing, we were able to come up with the extra money that we will need. I had a feeling things were going to fall into place with this house somehow. We are super duper excited and can't wait to make this house our home.

So now it's just a matter of taking care of all of the details of the purchase process. We had our inspection today which, though slightly overwhelming (such a lot of info to digest in a short amount of time), went well. Overall, the house is in pretty good condition, especially considering the age. Of course there are a few things that will need to be fixed, but nothing that we felt was too much to take on. We are also going with an FHA loan, so a couple of things will likely need to be taken care of prior to closing, but we won't know for sure until the appraiser comes out to look at the house.

In the meantime, we can work on getting our financing squared away and locking in a rate. Oh, and packing. Lots and lots of packing!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-40000630325245276642011-11-06T13:50:00.000-05:002011-11-06T13:50:32.069-05:00The Journey Continues...A lot has happened since my last post. First of all, that 1940 colonial (the runner-up) was gone from the market just a few days after we looked at it. Over the past month we have looked at quite a few more houses which I haven't blogged about because, well, most of them weren't really anything to write home about. There was one house that, though it didn't quite meet all of our needs, we both liked a lot. We were tempted to make an offer on it, but after doing the calculations and figuring out what our monthly payment would be, we realized it was too much of a financial stretch for a house that wasn't really what we were looking for, so we decided against it. But, we have finally received some updates on that 1925 Hip Roof Colonial (it's about time!).

About a week ago, our realtor checked in with their realtor, and we got the news that the other offer was still in limbo, but if it fell through, they would be pulling the house off the market for reasons that they were not able to discuss (hmmm...I wonder what that's all about??). I was sorely disappointed, but thought to myself, 'well, at least I can move on'. But with no other houses on the market that we wanted to look at, we were both starting to feel pretty discouraged about house hunting. We were all set to take a little bit of a break, when our realtor called back yesterday with some new info for us (the plot thickens!).

It turns out that the other offer did fall through, and they are hoping to not have to pull it off the market, so, it appears as though we may get a shot at it (could it be true?!?). The one catch (there's always a catch, isn't there?) is that we would have to come up with a bit more money up front than we originally thought. Which poses a bit of a problem for us, as it's more than we currently have (drat!). However, I am a firm believer that if something is meant to be, it will be. So if this house is truly meant to be our new home (which I really feel it is), somehow, someway we will come up with the money. It's true what they say...things like this have a way of working out when you least expect it.

So, I'm 99% sure that we will be making a new offer on this house tomorrow. I know that this is just the start of the process, and we may run into snags along the way, but I can't help but feel excited about it. Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18053578157105797710noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7327056886902183109.post-89497155299886200282011-09-22T22:28:00.000-04:002011-09-22T22:28:44.587-04:001940 ColonialI haven't posted anything here in awhile because, well, there hasn't really been anything new to post about! Our house-hunting quest continues, but ever so slowly. Still no word on the 1925 Hip Roof Colonial. Sigh. It sure would be nice to at least know if the other offer on it was going to be accepted, but the bank seems to really be dragging their feet on it (you'd think they'd be eager to get the house sold, but apparently not). So we're still waiting and hoping.

Fortunately, while we're waiting and hoping, we're starting to see some new houses pop up on the market that are a bit more appealing than what we had been seeing. So at least now we're starting to find things that we actually want to go look at. (Yay!) One of which was this 1940 Colonial.

This house is definitely the best thing we've seen since the 1925 Hip

Roof Colonial, but it still doesn't quite compare. However, it does meet our top priorities (good location and nice neighborhood, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, and enough bigger than our current house that we would feel like we had more space), so for now, we're keeping it in mind...sort of a runner-up, if you will. Let's take a look, shall we?

First off, the exterior paint isn't in very good shape (which isn't too big of a deal, I guess, since I don't particularly like the color anyway), and the roof may need some work. But it does have a garage, which would certainly be nice. And there are a couple of nice trees in the front yard (yay!). Around back, there are more trees (yay!) and a nice rock wall along one side, but the yard is not very private at all (boo!).

Upon going inside, you quickly realize that the previous owners loved wall paper. Oh, how they loved wall paper! Stepping in the front door, the stairs are off to the right (wall paper), then straight ahead there's a strange little entryway to the kitchen (wood paneling), and off to the left is the living room. I think perhaps this was the only room in the house without wall paper. In

any case, the living room is quite nice...great hardwood floors, fireplace, and a nice archway into the dining room.

The dining room is lovely as well (though I could do without the wall paper), with hardwood floors, wainscoting, and a beautiful stained glass light fixture. On the other side of the wall to the right is the kitchen, and I could see knocking out part of this wall to open up into the kitchen (perhaps creating a place to put those vintage 1950's chrome and formica bar stools I've been hanging onto?).

On to the kitchen. The kitchen could use some updating, but nothing so intolerable that it couldn't be lived with for awhile. There is, of
course, wall paper, and ugly flooring, but overall the kitchen is a good
size and there are some nice windows over the sink.

That tiny little doorway to the right of the refrigerator leads to a tiny little bathroom. I would prefer if the bathroom were a little bigger, but it's better than no bathroom on the first floor (which is what we currently have). The bathroom has an oh-so-lovely combo of wood paneling and wall paper, with that same ugly flooring that's in the kitchen (hooray! a trifecta!). So that's the first floor. Let's head upstairs.

I was pleased that the stairs didn't seem to be as steep as our current stairs (but not so pleased with the ugly wall paper that lined the staircase and hallway), and that there were not one, but two(!) closets in the hallway. Off to the right is a nice big bathroom with (you guessed it!) wall paper. But overall, a decent bathroom, and probably twice the size of our current one. I think there was even a linen closet in there too!

Across the hall is the first bedroom, then there are two more bedrooms down the hall from there (one on each side), each with its own flavor of wall paper, but the orange and green plaid was the standout:

Despite the wall paper, the bedrooms were nice with hardwood floors and good closets. Also, through the closet of one of the bedrooms was a walk-up attic, which would be great for storage, or perhaps one day could be finished to expand our living space.

All in all, this house is sort of a mixed bag for us. The pluses: good location & neighborhood, enough rooms & space, layout was good, hardwood floors. The minuses: lack of privacy in backyard, exterior needs work, kitchen needs updating, and wall paper, wall paper, everywhere!
